ALCON 2026 Astro Imaging Contest
ALCON 2026 is pleased to announce the Astro Imaging Contest for this year’s conference.
Eligibility
In order to participate in the Astro Imaging Contest, participants must meet the following criteria:
Be registered for ALCON 2026
Earn less than $2,000 annually from the sale of their images/art
Register their image/art with the contest officials and receive a contest display tag for each item entered.
Contest Categories
Competitions will be held in the following 5 categories:
1. Deep Sky (>500 mm focal length)
2. Solar System (>500 mm focal length)
3. Rich Field (201-500 mm focal length)
4. Wide Field/Nightscape (< 201 mm focal length)
5. Art and Sketching
Rules
Contest participants may enter up to five images per category. Each image stands alone within each category.
Contest participants must complete a registration form for each image which will indicate the following information:
Their name and contact information. (Contest officials will keep this information confidential.)
The equipment and processing software used, and the time, date, and location the image was captured. (This information will be displayed with their image.) Images must be received by the contest officials no later than Friday, August 14 at 1:00pm.
No images captured by professional-level telescopes may be submitted.
Images may be entered as “exhibit only” if the participant does not want too many images competing against one another in a given category. (Note that Zipf’s Law greatly reduces this self-competition effect if there are 3 images or less in a category.)
Winners will receive only the highest medal earned in each category, but they may win a medal in more than one category.
Although not required, it is strongly recommended that:
Digital images should be cropped as little as possible.
Digital images are printed in a size ranging from 8”x10” to 12”x18” in the highest resolution format possible.
In order to help with planning for the contest space, please let the Astro Imaging contest committee know how many images you will be submitting at alcon2026@cinastro.org.
Judging
Entries will be voted upon by registered attendees of ALCON by using anonymous ballots distributed with registration packages. Voters will be asked to rank their top three choices in each category, as well as the best overall image.
Voting will take place on Friday, August 14 at 4:00pm through Saturday, August 15 at 1:30pm.
The Astro Imaging Contest officials will tabulate ballots at the close of the contest voting window.
Zipf’s Law will be used to accumulate points.
* 1 point for a first-place vote
* 1/2 point for a second-place vote
* 1/3 point for a third-place vote
Winners will be announced and prizes awarded during the awards section of the Saturday evening Keynote Banquet.
