John Blasing
CAS VP2 / Radio Astronomy Team Leader /
CAS Moeller Observatory Team
John is one of the lead members of the Radio Astronomy group at CAS. He lead the construction of a Radio JOVE installation at CAS headquarters in September 2023, operational just in time for the annular solar eclipse the following month. CAS's RadioJOVE work during the April 2024 solar eclipse drew official recognition from the NASA-Radio JOVE Project, and coverage in the science news magazine Eos. He is CAS's primary contact with the NASA-Radio JOVE citizen science community.
In late 2025, John coordinated a formal collaboration between CAS and the University of Cincinnati, under which UC's student-lead research lab CubeCats will operate a radio ground station on CAS property to communicate with an earth-orbiting CubeSat of their own design. John now manages the CAS-side of the ongoing collaboration.
John joined CAS in 2022, and is currently serving his fourth term as 2nd vice president. He is co-chair of CAS's Strategic Planning committee, and is a member of the CAS Moeller Observatory team. He also helps develop demonstration exercises for member development and outreach.
John's interest in astronomy stems from his primary interest, physics. He maintains a private laboratory and performs undergraduate-level physics experiments as a hobby. He earned a BS in Engineering at the University of Cincinnati, enjoyed a long and varied career in electrical, mechanical, and aerospace engineering, and retired from GE Aerospace in 2019.
Topic: John will be co-presenting on CAS’s citizen science efforts, specifically in radio astronomy.
