Since opening in 2004, we have filled a substantial void in our nation’s cultural heritage. Rooted in the stories of the Underground Railroad, we illuminate the true meaning of inclusive freedom by presenting permanent and special exhibits that inspire, public programming that provoke dialogue and action, and educational resources that equip modern abolitionists.”

Located on the banks of the Ohio River in downtown Cincinnati, the National Underground Railroad Freedom Center explores the courageous stories of freedom seekers, abolitionists and others who resisted slavery. Through powerful artifacts, films and interactive exhibits—including an authentic early-1800s slave pen—the museum traces the journey from American slavery and the Underground Railroad to the continuing global struggle against human trafficking and modern-day slavery.
